REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED
Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished artist, there’s something for you at ASBA’s conference. You’ll be immersed in botanical art and leave with memories to inspire you for a long time to come. In addition to the three-day core conference, there are pre- and post-conference workshops providing in-depth study. This year’s conference will be held at the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center. A few blocks away is the inspiration and beauty of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. A highlight of the Pittsburgh conference is the opening of the Hunt Institute’s 15th International Exhibition - one of the world’s most prestigious exhibitions of botanical art.
Pre- and Post-Conference Workshops
Come early or stay late! Two-day workshops preceding the conference are Extreme Detail on Kelmscott Vellum with legendary artist Jean Emmons and Creative Color Mixing with Scotland’s Fiona Strickland (Best in Show at ASBA’s 2015 Annual International). 2013 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art winner, John Pastoriza-Piñol, comes from Australia to share his exciting blend of scientific analysis and symbolic realism in watercolor. His three-day workshop is October 16, 17, 18.
Your Day-by-Day Conference Activities
Welcome Reception
We’ll kick off the conference with a Welcome Reception at the Wyndham Wednesday evening at 5:00. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. Meet up with old friends and make new ones as we begin a full schedule of activities.
Classes, Lectures, Trips and More!
On Thursday, October 13, the popular Portfolio Sharing will be held across the street at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. Everyone, at every level, is invited to share what they’ve been working on throughout the year. You will be able to purchase original art, prints, and cards from the artists with 30% of sales contributed back to support ASBA programs. The Annual Meeting and Luncheon will catch you up on ASBA activities and will be followed by the Techniques Showcase featuring Nan Wiggins (Powdered Pigment), Kelly Leahy Radding (Casein), and Fiona Strickland (Watercolor). A hands-on class with Martha Kemp, Juror Training with Carol Woodin, a lecture on vellum with Jesse Meyer, and the Education Forum fill the day. Then it’s off to the Hunt for the evening opening of the highly anticipated 15th International Exhibition.
Friday and Saturday will include many hands-on classes, lectures, tours, and the Open Studio, where you can drop in throughout the day to watch free demonstrations by noted botanical artists, paint on your own, meet new friends, or just hang out. Visit Hunt Institute to see the International Exhibition again and enjoy Hunt’s special programs.
The Art Bazaar, which you all enjoyed so much last year, and the Awards Banquet when ASBA honors its members, are great finales to the conference.
