Mary Bauschelt
ASBA Director, Mary Bauschelt retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Botany Greenhouses and Garden. She has taught botanical art for fifteen years. Her work is held in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation and she has exhibited nationally and internationally.
Carrie Di Costanzo
Carrie has been painting with watercolor and gouache since 2009. She chooses subjects based on color and the way light creates interesting contrast and subtleties within the form. The last five years have been devoted to exploring egg tempera, an ancient medium where one can achieve beautiful luminosity in a painting. Carrie has been teaching watercolor and gouache classes since 2014 and recently began teaching egg tempera workshops. She strives for a friendly, interactive class experience with plenty of live demonstrations and individual feedback. Carrie has exhibited extensively throughout the US. Her work is held in the Botanical Collections at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and private collections. Marilyn Garber
Marilyn Garber is a botanical artist, educator and founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art in Minneapolis (2001). She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, serving as its President from 2007-2009. Her paintings have been included in exhibitions from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, Thailand.Lara Call Gastinger
Lara Call Gastinger is an artist and botanical illustrator from Charlottesville, Virginia and was the chief illustrator of the Flora of Virginia, a botanical reference. She has her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in plant ecology from Virginia Tech. She has been awarded two gold medals (2007, 2018) at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art shows in London and her work is in the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Her artwork appears in the latest Peterson's Field Guide to Mushrooms and ASBA's Botanical Art Techniques Handbook.Roger Hammer
Roger Hammer is a professional naturalist, author, and photographer with an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Florida International University. He is the author of Everglades Wildflowers, Florida Keys Wildflowers, Central Florida Wildflowers, Attracting Hummingbirds and Butterflies in Tropical Florida, and Exploring Everglades National Park.Leo Hernandez
Leo Hernandez studied at the Frank Reilly School of Art and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He worked in the Art Department of M. Lowenstein Textile Co. before returning to Florida in 1974. He is a member of the Tropical Botanic Artists Collective.Wendy Hollender
Wendy Hollender is a botanical artist, author, and instructor and leads workshops throughout the world as well as having an online instructional program (Draw Botanical.) Due to Covid Draw Botanical has launched a series of Zoom Workshops that have been highly successful and meaningful during this challenging time. Hollender’s illustrations have been published extensively. Her work has been in numerous ASBA International Exhibitions, the Hunt Institute and the Shirley Sherwood Gallery. Robin Jess is the former Executive Director of ASBA. She is fluent in graphite, watercolor, pen and ink, and etching and is the Coordinator of The New York Botanical Garden’s Botanical Art and Illustration Program.Heeyoung Kim
Known as a wildflower painter, Heeyoung Kim documents native plants of prairies and woodlands of Midwestern USA. Her works are identifiable by the precise depiction of the botanical aspects of the plant species in unique compositions. She won RHS gold medal, Best in Show of HSNY/ASBA, and Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art by ASBA, among others. Her works are in various collections including Transylvania Florilegium. Kim founded Heeyoung Kim Botanical Art Academy at Brushwood Center, Riverwoods, IL., and teaches the traditional art form in watercolor, crow quill pen and ink, and graphite pencil with the focus on the serious/professional development of individual student’s projects by providing in-depth instructions and feedback with continuation.Kelly Leahy Radding
Kelly Leahy Radding is a painter of contemporary naturalism. She delves into the natural world to find her subjects and explores alternate mediums, such as egg tempera, to tell their unique stories.Mindy Lighthipe
Mindy Lighthipe developed the 250 hour course curriculum for the Natural Science Illustration certification at the NY Botanical Garden. She teaches Natural Science Illustration at the University of Florida, teaches online, leads Botanical Art Tours, and exhibits and sells her art worldwide.Jesse Meyer
Jesse Meyer comes from a family that has been involved in the animal hide and tanning industry for 500 years. He has been making parchment and vellum since graduating from college and constantly working on improving and understanding the product and process. He is current president of, and helps to run, Pergamena Parchments & Leathers in the Hudson Valley, NY area.Janet Mosely Latham
Janet is a native Miamian and her interest in Priscilla Fawcett and Lee Adams began when she worked at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in the early 2000s. She has published articles on Fawcett, Adams and David Fairchild in The Tropical Garden, Brittonia, Moscosoa, The Botanic Artist and Botanical Review.Derek Norman
Born and educated in England, Derek Norman has received gold and silver gilt medals from the Royal Horticultural Society and is represented in the permanent collections of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium Society, the British Museum and the Library of Congress. He serves on the Executive Committee of the ASBA, and is the immediate past President of ASBA.Hillary Parker
Hillary Parker is a naturalist and international award winning botanical watercolor artist with paintings exhibited and sold worldwide. With a dual career of teaching and painting for over 25 years, she paints for private and public commissions, juried exhibitions, and presents international workshops, lectures and private art instruction.Lynne Railsback
Lynne’s watercolors typically consist of subtle neutral tones. Using a “lift-out” technique and five pigment palette she’s able to capture the fine details in nature whether the specimen is neutral or colorful. Also important are her materials. Sarah is Education Director and Lead Instructor for the Wellesley College FOBG Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration and Founding Director of NESBA. She has been a member of ASBA since 2002, and has served as Board Member and Education Chair.Betsy Rogers-Knox
Betsy earned a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from The NYBG and is enchanted by the full lifecycle of plants and their habitats. Her work has been shown widely in the US including the 13th-21st ASBA International Exhibitions, the NYBG Triennial , Out of the Woods, and the RHS Botanical Art Exhibit in London in 2016 and 2018 where she received the Judges Special Award for the educational and ecological value of the work. Her work is held in the collection at the RHS Lindley Library in London.Margaret Saylor
Mushrooms and fungi have become Margaret Saylor's signature subject. Featured in watercolor, graphite, and egg tempera, Margaret forages in her native Berks County, Pennsylvania, or wherever she happens to be. Observation, good drawing skills, and enthusiasm are key to any botanical painting and Margaret conveys this to her students in a fun and engaging manner. For 10 years, she has taught both in person and now online for many venues, including public gardens, art institutes, and botanical art societies. She was awarded a certificate, with distinction, in botanical art from the New York Botanical Garden. Margaret exhibits her work but gets the most satisfaction from finding the perfect subject and painting it for the love of art.Elaine Searle
Elaine works on paper and vellum, finding inspiration in a very wide range of subjects. Her artworks are known for their impact, depth and layered composition. Elaine’s work has been selected for inclusion in Prince of Wales’s Highgrove Florilegium and Transylvania Florilegium. She has works in the collections of The Hunt Institute and The Huntington Library and her work has been purchased by many private collectors. In Spring 2022 she was awarded a Botanical Art Residency at The Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Over 15 years teaching botanical art with a passion from beginners to masterclass level. Offering Zoom tuition, holiday courses in Europe, mentoring and workshops, Elaine has also been a guest tutor (virtual and in-person) for many botanical organisations. Deborah Shaw has a degree in fine art as well as studying botany, native California flora and scientific illustration. Ms. Shaw is a member of ASBA, two ASBA chapters, and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She teaches botanical art, and taught illustration, design and information design at UC Irvine Extension, where she was recipient of the "Distinguished Instructor" award. Deborah's work is in the permanent collection at the Hunt and in private collections. As a Staff Illustrator for the Botany Department at the Smithsonian Institution, Alice Tangerini has been specializing in drawing plants in pen and ink and graphite since 1972. Her illustrations of plants appear in scientific periodicals, floras, and botanical and nature books. In addition she teaches classes in her illustration techniques in botanical gardens and in academic institutions.Donna Torres
Donna Torres teaches botanical art at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and painting at Florida International University in Miami. She studied botanical illustration with Priscilla Fawcett and has an MFA in drawing and painting from FIU. Her work reflects her interest in shamanism and medicinal plants.Denise Walser-Kolar
Denise began her journey into botanical art in 2003, after receiving a botanical art class from her parents as a birthday gift. She received the Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art in 2015, and received a Silver-Gilt medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2011. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Denise teaches vellum workshops across the country.Catherine Watters
Catherine has been teaching since 1999, venues include ASBA conferences and chapters, UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Wellesley College, and France. She was an instructor and curriculum developer for the Filoli Botanical Art Certificate Program for 20 years. Carol Woodin enjoys spending time out in the gardens, fields and forests looking at and making studies of plants for future paintings. Her paintings in watercolor on vellum have been collected and exhibited around the world. She has taught botanical watercolor for over 25 years, and is co-editor of the ‘new standard’ botanical art instruction book Botanical Art Techniques, A Comprehensive Guide, published by ASBA and Timber Press. She received a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1995, the 1998 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award, the 2016 Orchid Digest Medal of Honor.Fatima Zagonel
Fatima Zagonel is a graphic designer and scientific illustrator. She is a Margaret Mee Foundation Fellow, Royal Botanic Gardens - Kew, 1999. Fatima is the Founder and Instructor, Botanical Illustration Center of Paraná - CIBP. Most meals are included in the conference fee including breakfast and lunch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the Saturday evening banquet. Light refreshments will be served at the Welcome Reception on Wednesday and Thursday’s Wildflower Forum. Many activities are free including: Portfolio Sharing, The Story of Vellum, Juror Training, Wildflower Forum, Education Forum, Grant Project Presentations, Beyond Accuracy Presentation, Weird, Wild & Wonderful Exhibition, and The Botanical Artists of Fairchild Gardens lecture. First-come, first-served policy: You may register online or by mail. Online registration is the best way for you to get the classes you want. Mail-in registrations will be processed when received, not based on postmark date. Mail-ins postmarked prior to opening day of registration (July 18) will not be processed.
We recommend registering online beginning July 18, Noon Eastern Time.
Confirmation: Sent via email only to those registering online; by US Postal Service to those registering by mail.

1. Current ASBA membership is required for registration.
2. The ASBA Annual Meeting and Conference is a three-day event. Partial registration is not available. Preference is given to conference registrants for pre- and post-conference workshops and activities.
3. Registration Fees:
Registration fee on or before August 16, 2015:
$360 for current members
Registration fee on or after August 16, 2015:
$425 for current members
4. Registration Deadline:
Registration is closed as of September 4, 2015. No registrations are accepted after this time, no exceptions.
5.Refund and Cancellation Policy:
Cancellation on or before August 16, 2015 - $75 fee. All workshop fees refunded.
Cancellation after August 16 through August 21, 2015- $150 fee plus 20% of workshop fees
Cancellation after August 21 through September 4, 2015 - $200 fee plus 50% of workshop fees
Cancellation Pre-and Post-conference Workshops on or before August 15 – 50% of fee
Pre- and Post-conference Workshop cancellation after August 15 – no refund.
No refunds of registration fee or workshops dropped after September 4.
Health emergency or death in the immediate family: Refunds will be same as above except cancellation on or after October 1 through October 10, $200 of the basic registration fee and 50% of all other fees will be refunded to the registrant. If a guest cancels due to health emergency or death in the immediate family on or after October 1, 75% of guest meal fees and 50% of any other fees will be refunded.
ASBA reserves the right to cancel any workshop that does not meet a minimum registration and to replace an instructor in the event that an instructor is unable to fulfill their obligation to teach.
