Tillandsia paucifolia

The genus of Tillandsia plants is my favorite. The beautiful appearance and epiphytic nature of Tillandsia species are very intriguing. Epiphytic plants generally attach themselves to other surfaces, such as trees or rocks, and obtain moisture and nutrients from the air. Since this plant is native to the American continent, it is surprisingly difficult to grow well in hot and humid Japanese summers, and I have failed several times. However, I have now learned how to manage them, and I am able to increase the number of offsets or “pups.”

I have painted four different species of Tillandsia to date. In this work, the elegant style of the plant and the white hairs (trichomes) visible on its surface are special features. Trichomes absorb and trap water and play a role in protecting the leaves from strong sunlight. It was a challenging task to paint the fine hairs, but I carefully took my time using the thinnest brush.
