Aesculus hippocastanum

I grew up in a small Quaker village in western New York where the streets were lined with

chestnut trees. I now spend five months of the year on an island in Maine and there, the main street is lined with them as well. I don’t like to paint flowers, so leaves and their seasons have always appealed to me.

Chestnut leaves have a particular personality that grows more and more interesting as they age into fall. I had so much fun painting this leaf that I turned it over and painted the other side as well. Of my two paintings, the one chosen for this exhibition shows the top surface of the drying, brittle, curling leaf.
