Welcome to St. Paul, Minnesota from ASBA and the Great River Chapter!

What most often stands out to first-time visitors to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul is the strong connection to nature. This large and sophisticated metropolitan area is studded with lakes, rivers, parks and preserves. Minnesota is known for cold winters and hot summers, but you’ll find that people here tend to embrace the outdoors no matter what the weather holds.

While the region is often associated with Scandinavian or northern European heritage, the name “Minnesota” is derived from its Dakota name “Mni Sota Makoce,” which is translated to mean “land where waters are so clear they reflect the clouds.” Today, our metropolitan area is still home to Dakota and Anishinaabe descendants in addition to thriving multicultural communities, and we look forward to leading you through many facets of Minnesota at ASBA 2025.

Our conference theme, “Home of the Headwaters” pays homage to the Mississippi River, which originates in northern Minnesota and flows through the downtowns of both Minneapolis and St. Paul, making its way to the Gulf of Mexico. A secondary theme that has emerged for this year’s conference revolves around what happens when scientists, artists, and conservators work together. Botanical artists can fully appreciate this confluence, so conference programming will lean into that theme.

Although the smaller of the Twin Cities, St. Paul is the State Capitol with its own colorful history. Nearby restaurants provide great dining opportunities in charming atmospheres, and other restaurant options are just a short ride from the hotel.  Here’s a link to encourage your wanderings: https://www.visitsaintpaul.com.

Should you need a break from painting, consider meandering a few blocks away to have tea at the historic St. Paul Hotel, take in a concert at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts or just stand in historic Rice Park and smile at the bronze Peanuts Gang statues, where Schroeder plays his piano and Lucy doesn’t hear a note. Maybe you can catch a hockey game at the Excel Energy Center or, if you want to go further afield, take a walk or drive along St. Paul’s Summit Avenue, which passes by the St. Paul Cathedral and runs to the Mississippi River, boasting the longest stretch of Victorian-era mansions in the country.  On the Minneapolis side of the metro area, the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Birding Sanctuary is the oldest public wildflower garden in the country. It’s well worth a visit in the spring and summer.

Fun fact – did you know that Minnesota is home to both Honey Crisp and Sweet Tango apples, developed by the University of Minnesota at the award-winning Minnesota Landscape Arboretum? One of our conference courses will take you deeper into the world of apple research at “The Arb.” While there, you’ll have a chance to visit the amazing Andersen Horticultural Library.  ASBA 2025 will also include opportunities to visit the  Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Bell Museum of Natural History (which will be hosting the Curious Allies exhibit during ASBA 2025), as well as the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park. A small group will have an opportunity to do a nature sketching adventure at a rich fen, and let’s not forget the simple but enriching opportunities throughout the conference to meet and mingle with other botanical artists – a perennial highlight of ASBA!

As you can see, we’ve designed exciting programming that features the amazing classes and presentations for which ASBA Conferences are always known, while giving you the chance to explore the local flavor and essence of what makes Minnesota – the Home of the Headwaters – so special.

Volunteer

Consider volunteering at the Annual Conference.  This is a great way to meet and interact with ASBA members!
Check back soon for volunteer opportunities.

ASBA is committed to the health and safety of conference attendees. ASBA and the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square will follow Health and Safety laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the State of Pennsylvania, the city of Pittsburgh, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (collectively, the “Regulations”). We will ask conference attendees to agree to comply with all regulations in effect at the time of the conference.

*ASBA does its best to keep costs down, particularly for our Annual Conference. Registration fees are used to cover costs that ASBA incurs for hotel meals, receptions, lecture and workshop room rentals and A/V services as well as transportation to offsite programs. We do not make money off conference registrations. Although we know that our members' costs to attend the conference are substantial, we believe there is still great value in gathering in person, initiating, and building lasting friendships, and sharing our common passion for botanical art - in person!

TOUR: Minneapolis Institute of Art
TOUR: Minneapolis Institute of Art
Plan on arriving at the hotel on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in time to board the 1:00 p.m. tour bus leaving for Mia, the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Lori Williamson, Supervisor of the Print Study Room, will display fabulous examples of botanical art demonstrating connections between art and science. Works include hand-colored woodcuts from a 1485 Gart der Gesundheit (Garden of Health), 17th century engravings of anthropomorphized types of gardens, and modern examples of botanical artworks. Two one-hour viewings will be offered, each one for fifteen participants, leaving the remaining fifteen to wander through the museum's world-famous collections.

While one group is visiting the Print Study Room, other tour participants are invited to spend an hour or so touring the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collections on display –either on their own or as a small group with a Mia docent. In either case, pre-selected paintings and objets d’art featuring botanical imagery – from across many ages and cultures – will help visitors make the most of their time in the museum. This portion of the day is open to ASBA family and friends, as well as those who have signed up for the Print Study Room tour.

Techniques Showcase on Stage with Julia Trickey, Wendy Hollender, Jean Emmons
Techniques Showcase on Stage with Julia Trickey, Wendy Hollender, Jean Emmons
Three artists demonstrate and discuss on stage with close-ups of their techniques projected onto a large screen.

1:30PM Julia Trickey - Alternative Backgrounds
Whilst botanical artists usually keep backgrounds white when painting classic plant studies, there may be occasions when alternative options suit a particular subject or exhibition. Julia has created mock natural vellum backgrounds to enhance her dried specimen portraits and used dark backdrops as a tribute to 17th Century Dutch flower artists when painting tulips. In this showcase, she will share examples of her work and the techniques that she uses to create these effects.

2:30PM Wendy Hollender - Quick Techniques combining Colored Pencil and Watercolor to create detailed botanicals
Over the years I have refined and adjusted my technique for creating botanical paintings. In the past 4 years I embarked on a project to create 24 detailed paintings, each a different plant family combining many plants on one page 22 x 30 inches. In order to complete this project, I needed to work faster. I developed a technique to do this which I will demonstrate in this presentation.

3:30PM Jean Emmons - Finessing Watercolor on Kelmscott vellum
Inspired by a small subject, Emmons will begin with some initial “dryish” washes, then move to building many, many drybrush layers. Lifting, scratching, and sanding off mistakes will be covered. As always, Emmons will “push” the color in the underpainting.

TOUR: MN Landscape Arboretum
TOUR: MN Landscape Arboretum
Board the ASBA charter bus bright and early for a wonderful day of flora and fauna exploration. Located on 1,200 acres in Chaska, MN, about 30 miles from our hotel, the nationally recognized Arb has miles of trails, “28 specialty gardens, 44 plant collections, and about 6,000 unique species, cultivars, and hybrids.” As part of the University of Minnesota, the Arb “serves as a research center and extension of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS).” The Honey Crisp apple was developed here, and research into Minnesota agriculture and ecosystem diversity is ongoing.

Bring your art supplies and prepare to spend the day exploring – the Arb is a great place to sketch and paint – either outside in one of the many gardens where, by the time of the conference, most plants will have produced fruits and interestingly senescing plant parts, or inside the Snyder Building Meyer-Deats Conservatory. This small glass house is full of orchid species, among other plant types, including a couple of wonderful Nepenthes plants with fully developed pitchers. Plants are everywhere at the Arb – outside and inside both buildings – and the diversity will keep you interested in what you’re seeing and drawing. You can familiarize yourself with the Arb’s gardens by taking a 60-minute narrated tram ride through the space – this costs is $8 and is a great introduction to the Arb.

Art is also everywhere at the Arb and is an important part of the Arb experience. The gardens are filled with sculptures, and the buildings house exhibition spaces. “The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is the perfect intersection of art and nature with over 100 works of art plus nature-based art galleries and shows year-round. Visitors are welcome to explore the 3 indoor, rotating exhibitions and then visit the grounds to see the collections along Three-Mile Drive and in the Harrison Sculpture Garden, home of the Dakota Sacred Hoop Walk.” Make sure you spend some time in the Oswald Visitor Center. The Reedy Gallery hosts a variety of exhibitions, and, over the years, these have included the ASBA’s Weird, Wild, and Wonderful exhibition and the Great River Chapter’s Inspired by Nature annual exhibition. The walls outside the Café and the Skyway ramp between the Oswald Visitor and the Snyder building are also exhibition spaces. The Arboretum’s Flora and Fauna Illustrada will be exhibited in this space during the ASBA Conference. More artworks can be found in the Anderson Horticultural Library (AHL), located in the Snyder Building.

The Anderson Horticultural Library is “a rich resource for everyone from the weekend gardener planning a perennial border to the professional horticulturist. Its collection of nearly 20,000 books and 300 subscriptions to magazines, newsletters, and scientific journals provides information and inspiration. Areas of specialization include horticulture, botany, landscape design, botanical illustration, garden crafts, cookbooks, and natural history.” The library also has a children’s book collection.

The AHL is home to “the largest publicly accessible collection of George and Mira Nakashima furniture. . .Nakashima's beautiful, custom-designed tables, chairs, display cases, and shelving complement the high ceilings, large bay windows, and wood paneled walls of Edwin Lundie's architecture to make an inviting and comfortable retreat for reading, reflection, and research. Appropriate for the natural setting of the Arboretum, Nakashima's work shows an inherent respect for the life of a tree, reflecting his belief that the irregular growth and insect damage some would call flaws are instead indicative of the tree's character.”

During the ASBA Conference, the AHL will have special displays set up for our tour groups. These include the artwork created by Joyce Sidman for her 2018 book The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian’s Art Changed Science, along with the Library’s recent acquisition of Merian’s 1730 Histoire des Insects de l’Europe, with 94 hand-colored engravings, which will be exhibited in the Rare Book room. Additionally, the Library’s copy of the Highgrove Florilegium will be resting in a cradle designed for it by George Nakashima’s daughter, Mira.

Meet the Author!  Joyce Sidman, the author of The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian's Art Changed Science (2018), will be on hand in the Andersen Horticultural Library from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., to talk about her book and take questions.

All in all, a day full of plants, artworks, and your own creativity.

TOUR: Marjorie McNeely Conservatory & Bell Museum
TOUR: Marjorie McNeely Conservatory & Bell Museum
Load the ASBA charter bus to depart the hotel by 9am. Our first stop on this all-day tour is the marvelous Marjorie McNeely Conservatory located in Como Park. Tour participants will experience a 90 minute behind the scenes tour – described by the conservatory folks as a “trip through the many gardens” located within the conservatory, learning about both its history and “how the garden staff keep the conservatory looking so lush and green all year long.” We’ll enter through the fern room, a place that is green and humid and full of over 100 species of ferns (and also some very large horsetails). We’ll then move into the Palm Dome – full of cycads, palms, bromeliads, some orchid species and a host of other plants. Two rooms that flank the Palm Dome are the Sunken Garden, a wonderland of color and scent, with floral displays that change seasonally, and the North Garden, which is full of plant species that are important to humans. You can see a flowering Theobroma cacao (chocolate tree) there, and there’s a huge vanilla orchid vine climbing up the wall next to where you enter this garden, along with lots of fruiting plants, sugar cane, and other species. Each room has water features (koi ponds, fountains) and sculptures.

Bring your sketchbooks because, when you’re not on the tour, the glass house is a great place to sit and draw. Or visit the Tropical Encounters exhibit located in the same building – birds, fish, insects, plants, and everyone’s favorite – the sloth. If it’s nice out, take a walk and visit the Japanese Gardens located close to the building, visit the bonsai collection, and/or take a look into the orchid propagation room.

After lunch a short bus ride will get everyone the 3 miles to the Bell Museum, “Minnesota’s official natural history museum, established by the legislature in 1872 and held in trust by the University of Minnesota. For over a century, the museum has preserved and interpreted our state’s rich natural history and served learners of all ages.” The scientific collections, including the herbarium collection, “contain over one million specimens, representing every county in Minnesota and various locales around the globe.” We will have a guided tour of the fabulous dioramas and plant-related exhibits. These dioramas, showcasing a variety of Minnesota habitats across the seasons, were created starting in 1946 by Francis Lee Jaques, a wildlife artist (among other talents) who spent almost 20 years at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, but returned to the state of Minnesota (he spent much of his growing up years here) to paint these dioramas. When the Bell moved from a building on the Minneapolis campus to its new building on the St Paul campus, many of these dioramas were carefully removed and renovated for display.

The ASBA’s Curious Allies: Mutualism in Fungi, Parasites, and Carnivores Exhibition will be hung in the Bell Museum gallery at the time of the 2025 conference, and folks on this tour will be able to spend time taking a good look at the pieces created by ASBA artists that highlight the connection between plant species and other species that closely associate with plants. From the ASBA website: Chosen are 48 artworks from artists in the US, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, and the UK. The artworks included illustrate various elements of the theme, examining important and often unobserved relationships fungi, lichens, mycotrophic, parasitic, and carnivorous plants have with other plants and animals. The Bell Museum is relatively close to our hotel, so even if you are not taking this tour, we encourage you to get over to the Bell to view the Curious Allies exhibition.

CLASS White on White with Watercolor with Marilyn Garber
CLASS White on White with Watercolor with Marilyn Garber

It’s not as difficult as you might think. Painting a white subject on a white background is a study of color. Creating form is accomplished by observing and then laying down very subtle primary colors with an emphasis on values. Patience is key as each transparent layer must dry before applying the next. We will attempt to avoid the color gray! Our class subject will be a small white pumpkin-shaped gourd with stem. The techniques you learn can be applied to any white subject in your future works.

This course is suitable for beginners and those who would like to try this technique, which is rarely used in botanical painting. The main aim is to get a feeling for the pastosity of the oil paint and the structure of the canvas. Very impressive results can be achieved for both small and, in particular, large formats. As this is a day course, we will concentrate on a small format. We will use a primed canvas panel (available in art supply stores). We will use the allaprima technique, i.e. we will finish an area of the motif while the paint is wet and corrections are possible. We do not use any harmful solvents or painting mediums.

PRESENTATIONS: Everything You Want to Know About Framing- A Live Q&A with Karen Desnick, Co-Owner Metropolitan Picture Framing, An Evening Filled with Poetry and Music

Do you often wonder the best ways to frame your completed artwork? Hate doing math but need to calculate the size of a custom mat? Well…. you are in luck! Bring your questions and join your fellow ASBA members in this informative evening session with Karen Desnick of Metropolitan Picture Framing. Karen will answer your framing questions, share videos and step by step instructions on all of your framing needs. This framing advice is based on the conservation methods used by their museum clients. You will be framing like the pros.

Close your Friday conference day with a very special presentation of  poetry and music. "As we celebrate Minnesota, Home of the Headwaters, we acknowledge that many tributaries form this mighty river that runs all the way down to the Gulf. The largest tributary on the eastern edge of Saint Paul is the St. Croix (pronounced "Saint Croy"). It is one of the original eight rivers under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 and is considered a local treasure for its clear blue waters and abundant wildlife habitat. As artists, we understand how expressions recognizing the beauty and fragility of nature — in whatever form — can attract attention to wilderness protection. Tuning your ears and minds to such an homage, we hope you will enjoy the words of Minnesota poet Laurie Allmann and the music of Minnesota musician Carol Caouette, in a short performance from their St. Croix Suite."

TOUR Holistic Nature Sketching at a Bog/Fen with Lara Call Gastinger and Tara Perron
TOUR Holistic Nature Sketching at a Bog/Fen with Lara Call Gastinger and Tara Perron
Learn to relate with plants on a different level. Connect your head and heart space with the plants around you to approach our art from a different angle. This session pairs widely respected field sketcher and botanical artist, Lara Call Gastinger, with Dakota and Anishinaabe plant medicine healer and storyteller, Tara Perron. It will provide participants with an immersive experience among fall woodland and wetland plants in a rich fen/floating bog nature preserve (www.tamaracknaturepreserve.org) about 15 minutes from the conference hotel, by bus. Tara will share indigenous teachings about our plant relatives, including how to greet them before considering them as artistic subjects. Lara will center us as we sketch our chosen plants, providing inspiration and artistic guidance. The site features boardwalks through the wetland, as well as woodland trails. Dress for the weather, though an indoor plan is in place in case of rain.

Note: This walk requires walking on uneven surfaces on a 1-mile loop trail. You are welcome to bring a folding camp stool if you need a place to sit. There are no guaranteed spaces to sit in the preserve.

LECTURE Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Florilegium Project with Marilyn Garber and Susan Wilkins
LECTURE Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Florilegium Project with Marilyn Garber and Susan Wilkins
Join Susan Wilkins, Curator of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary, and Marilyn Garber, Founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art, for a presentation about the creation of a Florilegium for America’s first public wildflower garden. You’ll learn about partnering with a garden in your locality to do a similar project.   The 18-acre Garden is nestled in the heart of Theodore Wirth Regional Park near downtown Minneapolis. It includes woodland, meadow, and wetland garden areas with more than 600 native plant species present in the plant collection.   Its legacy dates to 1907 when Minneapolis botanist Eloise Butler and botany teachers petitioned the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to create a natural botanical garden to preserve and display Minnesota native flora.   The Florilegium project started in 2010 and contains 111 paintings by 44 artists from the School.  It will be exhibited in full at the Bell Museum of Natural History, St. Paul in 2026/2027.

CLASS Into the Dark: Mastering tonal values and creating 3-D form (graphite) with Kerri Weller
CLASS Into the Dark: Mastering tonal values and creating 3-D form (graphite) with Kerri Weller
Color gets all the glory, but value does all the work! This is a pencil/paper workshop with no color work involved. Kerri simplifies fundamental concepts and techniques with drawing exercises that focus on shapes and their design, tonal values, creating 3-dimensionality, lost and found edges and exploring light on form. All are key to the success of an artwork. We’ll finish the day drawing a small composition incorporating lessons learned. With a mastery of values it’s easy to head into the dark, and to gain confidence working in color!

CLASS Cast Shadows in Watercolor with Andreas Hentrich
CLASS Cast Shadows in Watercolor with Andreas Hentrich
A cast shadow is not normally necessary in botanical illustration. Occasionally, however, the botanical artist wishes to depict his specimen lying on a surface. In this case, it is important to pay as much attention to the cast shadow as to the specimen. This applies in terms of color, intensity and extension.

In this class a motif with bean seeds (printed on watercolor paper, Dorée 300g, hot pressed) will be given and we will add the corresponding cast shadows with the help of a photo template. Essentially, it comes down to a technique of careful mixing and glazed blending.

LECTURE On Making Botanical Art: Dealing with the Fear with Scott Stapleton
LECTURE On Making Botanical Art: Dealing with the Fear with Scott Stapleton
This session is a conversation hosted by Scott about a problem in David Bayles and Ted Orland’s little book, Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, “Making art now means working in the face of uncertainty, living with doubt and contradictions, doing something no one much cares whether you do, and all for which there may be neither audience nor reward.  Hence, fear—'the fear that your fate is in your own hands, but that your hands are weak’ (Joseph Conrad).  Talent is what others have; what you’ve got are problems.” We’ll talk about it.
