About Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA is all about the rivers, the natural resources and hilly topography which are an indirect product of glaciation at the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. With steep sloping hillsides down to flatter areas near the riverbanks. This terrain and climate also determined the general botany / biology of southwestern Pennsylvania. These conditions helped form a wide range of coniferous and deciduous tree, palustrine wetlands, and a wide variety of native plants and flowers. The natural resources like coal, silica sand, natural gas, iron ore and navigable rivers put Pittsburgh on the rapidly developing “Western Frontier” (early 1800s) and the Second Industrial Revolution (1870-1914).

Major heavy industries like: glass, steel, and coal attracted financers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, and philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie, Henry W. Phipps, Henry Clay Frick and Andrew Mellon plus Roy Hunt and Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt’s Botanical Library and other who eventually built or donated private and public art collections such as the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation (the largest collection of botanical art in the Western Hemisphere). Andrew Carnegie’s, the Carnegie Museum of Art (the first museum in the United States with a strong focus on contemporary art, instructed to collect the “old masters of tomorrow”) and his Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s best in the world collection of herbarium specimens from western Pennsylvania and the greatest number of specimens from the rest of North America and beyond). Henry W. Phipps’s gift (1893) of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (with numerous individual plant collections and seasonal flower shows. Phipps wanted to erect something that {would} provide a source of instruction as well as pleasure to the people of Pittsburgh. This philanthropic largesse built the institutions that encouraged and now preserved the science, education, and fine art of botanical art and illustration in Pittsburgh.

Now in the 21st century Pittsburgh has again reinvented itself into a center of high technology, robotics, medical research & development, oil & natural gas, and a major center of higher education.

Volunteer Here
ASBA is committed to the health and safety of conference attendees. ASBA and the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square will follow Health and Safety laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the State of Pennsylvania, the city of Pittsburgh, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (collectively, the “Regulations”). We will ask conference attendees to agree to comply with all regulations in effect at the time of the conference.
*
ASBA does its best to keep costs down, particularly for our Annual Conference. Registration fees are used to cover costs that ASBA incurs for hotel meals, receptions, lecture and workshop room rentals and A/V services as well as transportation to offsite programs. We do not make money off conference registrations. ASBA has been charging a fee of $395 for conference registration since 2017. Costs have gone up in the last 7 years and we are forced to increase this year's registration fee to $460. Although we know that our members' costs to attend the conference are substantial, we believe there is still great value in gathering in person, initiating, and building lasting friendships, and sharing our common passion for botanical art - in person!

Sharon Field
Working as a full-time artist since 2009, I seek to push the boundaries of what is considered traditional botanical art in new directions, whilst continuing to maintain its beauty and dramatic form in a meticulous and unique way. My subject matter provides a unique view of the world, while at the same time maintaining the tradition of excellence in execution and technique, working on both paper and vellum (animal skin).

JOHN PASTORIZA-PIÑOL
I am a contemporary visual artist specializing in botanical art. While my work is rooted in this genre, I strive to challenge and break away from its traditional representations and tropes. Over the past 22 years, I have shown my art both nationally and internationally, through solo and group exhibitions held in various private and public galleries. Painting has become a fundamental part of my artistic practice, serving as both a method and a means for deeper exploration and analysis. My work is characterized by the use of vibrant and luminous colors, giving life to exotic
and rare botanical specimens. However, my paintings go beyond mere representations of flowers. Upon closer examination, they reveal a certain ambiguity of form and intention, conveying a complex and dark narrative that is influenced by the intricate connection between sight, touch, and thought.
I have received several prestigious awards and recognition throughout my career, including the American Society of Botanic Artists (ASBA) Dianne Bouchier Award for Excellence in Botanical Art in 2013. My artwork is included in numerous public and private collections around the world, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Ballarat, Hunt Institute in the USA, Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew (UK), Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, RMIT University, and the Collection of Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton. I am proud to have contributed to both the ‘Highgrove Florilegium’ and ‘Transylvania Florilegium’ under the auspices of the H.R.H Prince of Wales’
Charitable Foundation.
Currently, I am being represented by Scott Livesey Galleries in Australia. Additionally, I to teach intermediate and advanced classes through: the Geelong School of Botanic Art, (Geelong Gardens) and Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. I have expanded my teaching circuit to include interstate and international masterclasses too.

Margaret Saylor
Mushrooms and fungi have become Margaret Saylor's signature subject. Featured in watercolor, graphite, and egg tempera, Margaret forages in her native Berks County, Pennsylvania, or wherever she happens to be. Observation, good drawing skills, and enthusiasm are key to any botanical painting and Margaret conveys this to her students in a fun and engaging manner. For 10 years, she has taught both in person and now online for many venues, including public gardens, art institutes, and botanical art societies. She was awarded a certificate, with distinction, in botanical art from the New York Botanical Garden. Margaret exhibits her work but gets the most satisfaction from finding the perfect subject and painting it for the love of art.

Susan Tomlinson
Susan Tomlinson is an Associate Professor in the Honors College at Texas Tech University, where she teaches seminars in botanical art and scientific illustration. She is currently working on a book under contract, featuring botanical paintings of the many different species and cultivars of cotton.
Liv Virta-Meyer
Liv Virta-Meyer is honored to be hands down “the worst artist at this conference.” Because with that title comes the ability to say, “if I can achieve this, just imagine what you could do with this material and talent!” While she was never officially offered a job at Pergamena, she just kept showing up and asking Jesse questions and answering the phone. Now the Director of Sustainability and Special Projects -a title she made up- her goal is to provide first-hand information and to inspire all artists to explore Pergamena’s materials without fear.
