STORY BEHIND THE ART OF LIZZIE SANDERS

Rainbow Eucalyptus (Bark)
Eucalyptus deglupta
For a few years now I have been exploring the notion of pushing botanical painting towards contemporary abstraction. I have been trying to move away from the classically composed plant portrait and find ways of presenting a botanical subject in a new way. Tropical subjects lend themselves better to this treatment than Scottish natives, which are generally thin and spindly!
'Weird, Wild and Wonderful' is the perfect place to exhibit something as exotic as the bark of Rainbow eucalyptus. The colours of the peeling bark, ranging from pale lime green to deep purple, are quite spectacular, but the fine details on or just below the surface make the subject truly challenging.
