Chandelier D'or

Brachychiton bidwillii

'Chandelier d’Or' is the second in my series of three paintings inspired by the uniformity and beauty of the chandelier physique.

Brachychitons can be large monoecious flowering trees from the Malvaceae family growing up to 30m tall, native to Australia and New Guinea. The woody boat-shaped fruits can be as long as your hand and can grow in large tangled clusters. Different species will show smooth skins or finely hairy surfaces, from black colouration to rusty golds.

The other accompanying paintings are ‘Chandelier Noir’ and ‘Chandelier Rouge’, making a collection of Black, Gold and Red ‘plant chandeliers’.

I recently came upon this new painting technique, using watercolour, masking fluid and coloured pencils, giving me the advantage of working quickly and very effectively. This made it possible for me to consider working with large involved subject matter. I have a great interest in mixed media and different ways of rendering imagery. I revelled in the challenge to work with rich golds to develop this interesting spotted suede-like surface. This was a most inspiring subject.
