Fruits of Chinese Hawthorn
Crataegus pinnatifida
The Chinese hawthorn tree has beautiful flowers, but the fruit is also beautiful. The red fruit tastes sweet and sour. It is used as medicinal remedies in oriental medicine.
This work shows the charm of Chinese hawthorn fruits that can be seen in the autumn garden. To maximize the effect of color contrast, it was composed so that the plump red fruits are arranged in the center and surrounded by the mottled green leaves.
As I worked on the piece, the most difficult technical challenge was the expression of the stain and texture of the mottled leaves using colored pencils. It required a lot of patience and some new ideas for using the pencils.
This work is one piece of the series “the Autumn Forest of Soehoo-ri” that shows the diverse colors of autumn leaves and fruits of Korean native plants.
