Rose Hips with Leaves
Rosa 'Madame Grégoire Staechelin'
I have always been attracted to the Mme. Grégoire Staechelin Rose growing on a rustic trellis at Wave Hill in the Bronx, NY. Each June and July the trellis is covered with showy pink clusters of roses and in October with rose hips.
In this painting I focused on the hips and mottled leaves at the end of the season. The main focus is on the variety of hips, each with its own character. Secondarily, the focus is on the leaves. The painted yellow ground unifies the rows of hips with the leafy corner. The shadows cast by the hips and leaves anchor them to the painted ground. The leaves and hips are painted to scale.
The painting is in oils on gessoed paper. This technique allows me to build up multiple layers of color.
