STORY BEHIND THE ART OF DENISE WALSER-KOLAR

Sekapp Orchard Apple

Malus sp. (x 2)

My Grandma Viola died on October 11, 2014, at the age of 103. She was my best friend. She loved ice cream. A lot. Every year since, we get together as many family members as we can and celebrate her memory with ice cream at Flapdoodles. Last year after our ice cream, it was such a beautiful day, we decided to continue our celebration with a trip to the apple orchard.

Four generations of us climbed onto the tractor-pulled wagon and went out to fill our bags with apples. I found this wonderful apple (I was so excited I forgot to check the row marker to see what kind it was) and brought it home, intending to paint it. It sat in my fridge all winter and most of the spring. When I finally pulled it out and decided to paint it, it had such powerful memories of that day that I decided to paint it twice its actual size. Although I don’t know the name of the apple, the orchard is called Sekapps. So here is my apple, a reminder of a wonderful day and a beautiful life.
