Elecampane
Inula helenium
I'm not a lover of winter cold but living in Ottawa with an energetic dog I've been introduced to treasures I might otherwise have missed. Towering above the path along our local river, stand stark, skeletal ranks of elecampane, up to ten feet high. Close inspection reveals a wealth of contrasts. The withered leaves have an upper side of velvet and an under of leather, the woody stems show bright chestnut where the skin has peeled and around the Fibonacci pattern of the seed heads the remaining bracts shine in the sun.
I decided to work on a small, close cropped painting, to focus in on the hidden wonders of this plant.
