Amaryllis
Hippeastrum ‘Dancing Queen’
Each Christmas I force amaryllis bulbs in water. This year I tried a few different colors in hopes of painting one of them. The flower I chose had soft colors and lots of detail to work with. I have painted amaryllis bulbs and flowers separately but never flower, stem, bulb, and roots in one image.
When I sketched out my basic composition I decided to have only one flower open so that the design was not too wide at the top, as the flowers were huge!
Because it is such a tall plant, the painting is a very tall vertical shape which was different for me. Never had I painted such a bold vertical shape. This did create a minor problem for me. I had to sit and stand, work sideways, and upside down to complete the painting since I could not reach the top when it sat on my easel!
